I AM STILL STANDING: MY HUSBAND FOUGHT FOR HIS LIFE LIKE A WARRIOR

  • Toyin Okei

I am Toyin Okei, the wife of Tonna Okei. I would like to share my views concerning the experience of my husband, Tonna, in his journey to overcome medical challenges. It first started with a medical diagnosis of ulcerative colitis, which later became a battle of life and death. It is believed that there are no guarantees in life, as some would say, and that tomorrow is not guaranteed. I am a witness to this saying. I implore everyone to live their lives each and every day like there may not be a tomorrow. Take time to enjoy yourself and live your life positively.

The book “I am Still Standing” narrates the ordeal my husband went through and the impact it had on our lives, not only as individuals but also as a family. There have been “ups and downs.” I am grateful to witness the goodness of the Lord in our lives. In moments of despair, it is important to seek refuge in God. The most heartbreaking moment for me was when my husband and I had to educate our children on what to do and how to call for help in an emergency. I remember the days I spent in the hospital for weeks while he went in and out of consciousness. It was as if he went beyond and back again. I have never met anyone so strong-willed, determined, resilient, and full of life.

He fought like a warrior for his life. I had to teach him how to use a cellphone again after he regained consciousness.

There was a particular time at the hospital while he was in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit). A doctor walked up to me to suggest a priest come pray for him when things looked so grim. I humbly declined the offer. I never gave up. He never gave up. He pulled through and continues to pull through. He has had so many surgeries, from one issue to the next, since the liver transplant. There are still upcoming procedures he will face in the future. The care and treatment after transplant surgery are extensive and complex. The care and treatment are lifelong.

The book is inspiring as it brings hope and motivation to all; there is nothing that cannot be achieved. Medical expenses continue to rise, even with insurance. The co-pays and deductions increase as medical expenses increase. Your donations and proceeds will be appreciated. The proceeds will go towards medical expenses.

Toyin Okei,

Loving wife.
