Dr. Donald Peterson is a figure who stands out among the typical leaders we see in our daily lives. He came from a background of business and industry, creating successful ventures from scratch and guiding them to their zenith. His decision to delve into politics was driven by his desire to contribute positively to his community and a world beyond his corporate dealings. His transition from a business leader to a political figure, however, carried with it the unique leadership style that made his businesses thrive. This approach to leadership, known as the Peterson approach, exhibits a unique blend of democratic and contingency leadership styles.

The democratic style of leadership empowers followers, giving them a voice and treating them as essential parts of the decision-making process. Dr. Peterson executes this successfully by sitting down with his followers and encouraging them to voice their thoughts, ideas, or concerns. He values the input of his followers and takes their contributions seriously, implementing the best ideas collectively to benefit the group and the society they serve. Notably, he treats his followers with respect, loyalty, and generosity, setting a precedent for them and paving the way for meaningful interpersonal relationships within his circle.

In addition to his democratic leadership style, Dr. Peterson’s approach involves a mix of contingency leadership. This style believes that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to leadership. Depending on the situation or the individual, different tactics and methods may be employed. For Dr. Peterson, this means allowing his followers to take the reins of their work, respecting their autonomy and capabilities. By doing so, he fosters an environment that motivates followers to utilize their knowledge and skillsets to their fullest potential.

One of the hallmarks of Dr. Peterson’s leadership style is his openness to criticism. He encourages critique, viewing it as an opportunity for growth and self-improvement. He doesn’t view criticism as an attack on his person or ideas, but rather as a chance to better understand different perspectives and improve his leadership style.

Apart from Dr. Peterson’s unique approach to handling followers, his character plays a significant role in his leadership approach. His compassion, kindness, empathy, and love have significantly influenced his followers. This combination of sound leadership approach and personal ethics forms the foundation of the “Peterson Approach”.

The ‘Peterson Approach’ to leadership presents a leadership model that revolves around being a servant, avoidant of micromanaging, inspiring in followers the courage to express their opinions, and recognizing the value in every follower. This effective leadership approach tremendously opens doors for increased productivity and a happier, more motivated and innovative following.

Given the efficacy of the Peterson Approach in both business and political settings, it would be greatly beneficial to explore this leadership approach in more depth in academic settings. University studies on this approach could provide valuable insights for future business and political leaders, providing them with the tools and knowledge they need to lead effectively in their respective fields. After all, a great leader isn’t just one who knows how to lead but is also one who knows how to foster loyal, dedicated followers.
