The branch chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) at the University of Delta (UNIDEL), Agbor, Comrade Joel Ikwu, has commended the remarkable efforts of key individuals and groups whose dedication led to the resolution of the recent nationwide strike by the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU). In an exclusive interview with EOB News, Comrade Ikwu highlighted the tireless work of the National General Secretary of NASU, Prince Peters Adeyemi, the Joint Action Committee (JAC), and other notable leaders for their instrumental roles in addressing the grievances of the unions.

Comrade Ikwu paid glowing tribute to Prince Peters Adeyemi for his exceptional leadership and commitment to the welfare of NASU members across the nation. He emphasized that Adeyemi’s strategic negotiation skills and deep understanding of union matters were critical in reaching a resolution with the Federal Government.

“Prince Peters Adeyemi has shown exceptional dedication and an understanding of union matters, which has strengthened our position in critical negotiations with the Federal Government. His role in managing the affairs of NASU has truly demonstrated leadership at its finest,” Comrade Ikwu remarked.

Adeyemi’s contributions extend beyond national boundaries, as his role as President of Africa and Arab Countries and Vice President of Public Services International (PSI) has brought global attention to NASU’s advocacy. His international presence underscores his dedication to advancing the union’s objectives on both regional and global stages.

Comrade Ikwu further lauded the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU for its relentless pursuit of justice for its members. JAC’s commitment to transparency, consistent advocacy, and effective communication with union members were cited as critical factors in the suspension of the strike.

“The JAC has been a pillar of strength for NASU and SSANU members. Their unwavering dedication ensured that the unions’ voices were heard at the national level, moving discussions forward to achieve a resolution that benefits all stakeholders,” Ikwu stated.

The UNIDEL NASU chairman did not fail to recognize the contributions of NASU’s National President, Comrade Dr. Makolo Hassan and other executives who have steered the union through challenging times. He applauded their collective efforts in fostering trust and unity within the union, ensuring that members remained resolute in their demands for justice.

Comrade Ikwu, equally, expressed deep gratitude to Professor Stella Chiemeke, the Vice Chancellor of University of Delta, Agbor (UNIDEL), for her leadership in fostering industrial harmony within the institution. He credited her efforts with mitigating the impact of national labour disruptions on the university community.

“Prof. Chiemeke’s leadership reflects her commitment to the well-being of all staff members and ensures that UNIDEL remains a stable and productive academic environment,” he said.

While commending the temporary resolution achieved through these collective efforts, Comrade Ikwu emphasized the need for continued dialogue and collaboration among all stakeholders to address lingering issues affecting university staff nationwide. He urged the Federal Government and union leaders to build on the progress made and work toward implementing sustainable solutions.

“We hope this resolution will pave the way for lasting agreements that prioritize the welfare and career progression of NASU and SSANU members across Nigeria,” Ikwu concluded.

The dedication of leaders like Prince Adeyemi, the JAC, and supportive institutional heads like Prof. Chiemeke underscores the power of collaboration and effective leadership in resolving labour disputes. Their efforts have not only brought temporary relief to union members but also set a precedent for constructive engagement in future labour relations.
