Christmas came early for the staff and students of Agbor Alidinma Mixed Secondary School as the DR. PHILOMENA ONOYONA FOUNDATION (DPOF) celebrated the festive season with them on December 5th. The foundation, known for its commitment to uplifting the less privileged, brought joy and hope to the school community through a heartwarming event that highlighted the spirit of giving.
Dr. Philomena Onoyona, the founder and president of the foundation, is a distinguished social worker based in the United States with a PhD in Human and Social Services from Walden University. Speaking to the EOB News Crew in an online interview, she emphasized the foundation’s mission:
“Our goal is to inspire hope and progress, particularly in education, health, and wellness. This event is a way of recognizing the hard work and resilience of the staff and students of Agbor Alidinma Mixed Secondary School. By showing appreciation, we hope to encourage them to strive for excellence, knowing their efforts are deeply valued.”
The event was a day to remember, with every student receiving bags, notebooks, pens, and pencils, while the school’s principal, Mr. Igudia Emmanuel, and vice principal were presented with plaques in recognition of their dedication and service. The celebration also included light refreshments for all attendees.
Dr. Onoyona, who also heads the non-profit Hope Restored Advocacy Center, shared a touching story about what inspired her philanthropic journey. She recounted how her mother, a passionate educator and former educational inspector, dedicated her salary to supporting underprivileged students when others failed to fulfill their promises. Witnessing her mother’s selflessness sparked her own passion for giving back.
“Seeing my mother provide for those students with so much joy made me want to contribute in any way I could,” she said. “Above all, my darling husband, Hon. Sylvester Onoyona, PhD., has been very supportive of my dreams”
Represented at the event by Mr. Dennis Ehikwe, Dr. Onoyona’s delegation included notable figures such as Chief Godwin Ehikwe (The Oriri of Agbor), Barr. Augustina Odunna, Solomon Ehikwe, Ezepue Fidelia, Moedozie Doris, and Hilary Ehikwe. Their presence underscored the foundation’s strong community ties and commitment to collaboration.
The principal, Mr. Igudia Emmanuel, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the foundation for the honor bestowed on the school, he spoke through the Vice Principal, Mr. Akazue U.
“This recognition motivates us to continue our efforts in educating and shaping the future of our students. We thank the DR. PHILOMENA ONOYONA FOUNDATION (DPOF) and the Agbor Alidinma community for their generosity and support,” he said.
Dr. Onoyona also promised an even grander celebration next year, signaling her ongoing commitment to the school and its community. As an advocate for women’s rights, a politician, and a leader in social services, she continues to inspire change both locally and internationally.
The event was a powerful reminder that acts of kindness can brighten lives and foster resilience, bringing hope to those in need.
